Coelopynia Freeman

Taxonomic Notes

The apparently monotypic Australian genus Coelopynia has a quite characteristic larva with the head wedge-shaped in lateral view, the gape being the full width of the head, and the mandibles exceptionally long and slender (see images). However the larvae of the genus has not been described formally, nor has the true diversity been estimated.

Ecological Notes

Larvae are found patchily, but usually in deep lakes (eg Tasmania), billabongs (s.e. Australia) , and in both standing and slow flowing waters (Northern Territory and Western Australia).
